Sofia noticed the new girl before the teacher even said her name. She stood near the classroom door holding her backpack with both hands, looking at twenty unfamiliar faces.

“This is Nina,” the teacher said. “She joined us today.”

Nina gave a tiny wave. Sofia smiled back, but the lesson began before either of them said anything else.
